France: ANSM classifies hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) and two of its derivatives on the list of narcotics

France decided on Tuesday, June 12, 2023 to add hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) and two of its derivatives, HHC acetate (HHCO) and hexahydroxycannabiphorol (HHCP), to the list of narcotic drugs. This means in particular that their manufacture, sale and use will be prohibited in France from June 13, 2023.

This decision follows work carried out at the request of the Centers for the Evaluation and Information on Drug Dependence and Addiction Prevention (CEIP-A). This work reported that HHC presents a risk of abuse and dependence equivalent to that of cannabis. In addition, its chemical structure is similar to that of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), which is classified as a narcotic.
